The hope is that you can build something to bring home and continue the learning at home as you share with your family. Science classes will be offering extra credit for those who attend and participate. Hope to see you there!

PE Make Ups are Dec. 11, 12, 14 and 15,  afterschool from 3:30-4.  Students are to be dressed out in their PE uniform and be ready to participate.  This class is for students that have an excused absence or had a medical excuse and need to earn their points.

Any student that missed a run will be doing a make-up run during class that week.  If your student has missed multiple days, they should come to more than one make up day after school.

This is not for extra credit.

October 31

Halloween Guidelines

Students may come to school in free dress or in costume on Tuesday, October 31. Regardless of what is chosen, please remember to follow the guidelines for free dress as listed in the Parent-Student Handbook and the Halloween Costume Guidelines as listed below. Please note that there will be a school-wide activity on Halloween. Costumes should not be so cumbersome as to limit a student’s movement so he/she cannot participate in the activity.

Halloween Costume Guidelines

1. Safety first. Remember all costumes must maintain a safe environment at school. In light of this point, the following is not allowed on campus:

  • Gang apparel
  • Masks
  • Clothing or items that could lead to injury (very high heels, slippers, sharp objects)
  • Pajamas and/or slippers are unsafe because they do not protect against the elements or objects on the ground

2. We promote kindness and tolerance. Therefore, the following are not allowed on campus:

  • Inappropriate or offensive themed costumes (terrorist, bomber, etc.)
  • Weapons or chains as part of costumes.

3Halloween is for fun, not peer pressure or sexualization of pre-teens. Therefore, please refrain from the following:

  • Sexy or risqué costumes
  • Unnatural hair color or make-up which is not part of the themed costume

4. Education is our priority; your costume should not take away from classroom learning.

  • No water balloons, eggs, whipped cream or silly string, stink bombs, etc.
  • All special effects, make-up and hair color must be applied at home and not brought to school.
  • No clown costumes allowed due to recent incidents reported in social media and the news. Dressing as a clown for Halloween may cause classroom disruptions, due to fear or stress.

If you are unclear if your costume fits the proper guidelines please contact the attendance office before coming to school on October 31. Remember wearing a costume is a privilege that we want to extend to all students at Alta Loma, while still maintain a positive and safe learning environment. If you don’t think your costume follows the above guidelines, free dress guidelines or the School uniform is a good choice.

Hello Alta Loma Family,

As you hopefully are aware, we are fortunate to be partnered with Genentech and they would like to help give science students in our district the opportunity to experience science in another forum, other than the classroom.  The permission slips were distributed at the end of September and they are slowly being turned in through science classes.  The field trip is 100% paid for by Genentech, including transportation and admission to the venues.  The field trips for all 3 grade levels are taking place on Thursday, November 9th during the school day.  Locations for each field trip are as follows:

6th grade - California Academy of Sciences

7th grade - Exploratorium

8th grade - Hiller Aviation Museum

The 6th and 7th grade trips require a 1:8 adult to student ratio.  8th grade needs a 1:10 ratio.  In order for these field trips to take place, we must abide by these requirements.  Each field trip needs about 25 adult chaperones.  We could really benefit from having parent volunteers.  If you would like to spend a fun day with your child and a small group of their friends, please take the day off and join us.  You will ride the chartered bus with us, rather than having to drive kids in your own car.  If your child still has not turned in their permission slip, please sign the side that states that you would like to volunteer.  If the permission slip has already been turned in, please feel free to contact me through email and I will put your name on the list and have your child arrange their group.

At this point, 6th grade has about a dozen parents signed up, 7th grade close to 10, and 8th grade has 5.  We are a long way from the numbers we need, get in before the spaces fill up.  Thank you for your time.

Mr. Tom

Alta Loma Middle School is excited about our new program, Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support (PBIS). PBIS is a proactive approach to establishing the support needed for all students in school to achieve social, emotional, and academic success. Key focus areas of PBIS at Alta Loma include prevention, positive behavior supports, and using data to better determine the needs of our students.

We are looking for help from local community and surrounding area businesses to help support students and our program at Alta Loma Middle School. Acknowledging both students and staff for their dedication to the program will help ensure the success of PBIS in our school and help support positive behaviors in the community. Any form of support you may be able to provide would be greatly appreciated. Examples of things that may be helpful would include gift certificates, product sets/baskets, or financial donations to help purchase materials needed for the program. Any donation will be publicly acknowledged, as we are deeply grateful for your support.

We look forward to  partnering with you to ensure the success of our students.

Please use the form attached to fill out the necessary information and keep the portion below as an unofficial receipt for your records, until an official one is sent to you upon receiving the donation.

Sincerely,

ALMS PBIS Team

Hello Alta Loma Families,

I had the wonderful opportunity to attend the National Science Teacher Association Conference in Los Angeles prior to spring break.  The keynote speaker was Bill Nye the Science Guy and he was promoting this event, March for Science.  There will be 430 cities nationwide participating in this event and we are lucky to be having it locally, in San Francisco.

"On Earth Day, Saturday, April 22, 2017, we march in celebration of science. Science exists to seek answers, solve problems, and explain the universe around us.  Alta Loma will do its part in joining the global movement to defend the vital role that science plays in our health, safety, economies and governments."  The march will begin at Justin Herman Plaza in the Embarcadero and conclude at the Civic Center.

I encourage any families that would like to participate and support to join in the event.  I will be taking SSF BART and meeting at 9:15 in hopes of meeting at registration and listen to the speakers to kick the event off at 11:00 before the march begins at 12:30.  It would be great to have families attend so I don't have to manage a ton of kids and can enjoy the event, but if you are unable to attend and want to send your child, I have attached a permission slip even though this is not a school sponsored event.  You are more than welcome to meet us in the city as well but since it's Earth Day, I thought public transportation would be a great way to travel.  For more information, I have included the flyer and permission slip.

At the 2017 National Science Teacher Conference, Bill Nye said in regards to our students,

“I want you guys to change everything by the time you are the captains of industry.  You are not Generation X. You are not Generation Y.  I want you to be Generation S - for science.  You’ve gotta be optimistic about the future. You’ve gotta believe you can change things.”

Dear Alta Loma Middle School Community,

As was announced on Friday afternoon (3/3/17), the South San Francisco Police Department and the school district investigated an unconfirmed threat that was discovered at the conclusion of lunch period at Alta Loma Middle School that day. The graffiti had been located in one of the restrooms and contained verbiage that raised the concerns of the school administration, resulting in the police department being notified. Police immediately responded to the report, a safety protocol was enacted swiftly, and police searched the area and the campus was deemed to be safe. There was no evidence found indicating that the threat was credible. Although the school classes continued to be in session, parents were permitted to pick up their children early. All children and staff were safe and unharmed, and the parent pick up process went smoothly.

As a precaution, additional security measures are being put in place and staff and police will remain vigilant. School will be in session as regularly scheduled.

Anyone with information related to this investigation is encouraged to call the South San Francisco Police Department at 650-877-8900 or the anonymous TIP line at 650-952-2244.

The South San Francisco Police Department School Liaison Unit and the South San Francisco Unified School District maintain a close working relationship year-round to address the safety and security of all the school campuses in South San Francisco.
